Participate: IN THE NEWSFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 1, 2007 Elder Legends Project: Captures Golden Memories and Creates Caring Relationships DENVER, Colorado—With a deep belief that too much of the rich history and life stories of our elders and loved ones are being left untold, The Alliance for Holistic Aging (AHA) launched its first multigenerational Elder Legends Project with Christian Living Communities (CLC) at University Hills in Denver. Under the caring directorship of Sue Santori, residents are able to tell their stories to volunteer Legendaires and activities staff who guide them through the LifeBio web-based program and process to literally create individual autobiographies for each participant. The LifeBio program was chosen because the Ohio-based company pioneered a seamless process for creating stories using on-line and off-line methods. According to Jeff Rubin, Chair of AHA, “In conducting our research for the Elder Legends Project, we found numerous oral and written history projects taking place around the country. Yet few were able to sustain themselves simply because many adult children lacked the time and long term care providers lacked the staff to create the stories with their loved ones or their residents.” AHA’s research further indicated that volunteers could not only serve as valuable allies in capturing residents’ histories; but the intergenerational interactions motivated and engaged seniors and volunteers alike. Sue Santori, Elder Legends Project Director noted that “Having community partners who understand the value and benefits of implementing multigenerational Elder Legends Projects in their respective communities will be essential to the overall success of the program.” Currently Ms. Santori is recruiting additional volunteers and sites interested in joining the project. The Alliance for Holistic Aging (AHA) is dedicated to the creation and replication of life-affirming and affordable choices for self-directed aging. Its mission is to empower individuals and groups to develop and share new approaches, resources, products, and services for successful, community-based aging.
